The Circle of Courage is a model of positive youth development that integrates the wisdom of indigenous Native American philosophies of child rearing with research in resilience science and positive youth development. It is based on the principle that children have four universal growth needs: belonging, mastery, independence and generosity, and that when these needs are met, children can flourish. At Fort Saskatchewan Elementary we strive for each child to:
- know they belong
- build independence
- achieve and acknowledge their mastery
- see the benefits of generosity on themselves and others
Through circles and group work with EIPS Indigenous Consultants Jeremy Albert and Leah Atcheynum, as well as our Indigenous lead education teacher and school counsellor, our staff and students are learning about the value of the Circle of Courage and their unique contributions to the school community.
